Bullying and Harassment – What is it?
Bullying and harassment are behaviours that unfairly or unreasonably puts down, belittles, undermines, controls, abuses, scares, intimidates, excludes, offends or embarrasses. There are several laws that provide remedies for various forms of such behaviour including: anti-discrimination and equal employment opportunity law, occupational health and safety and workers compensation law and industrial relations law.
Some Examples
Depending on the particular circumstances any of the following could be bullying or harassment:
1. Deliberately setting someone up to fail.
2. Any form of aggressive or frightening behaviour including shouting and swearing.
3. Behaviour that is both unwanted and either sexual or discriminatory in nature.
4. Abusive, belittling or intimidating phone calls, emails, notes and so on.
5. Excessive work scrutiny, management by fear and inappropriate or unfair criticism.
